Laboratory Services

The Government Laboratory Service is operated as part of the Medical Department under the direct control of the Government Pathologist. All laboratories and branch laboratories came under his immediate direction so that there is complete unification of procedure and training of personnel.

Neither BCG nor tuberculin is manufactured in the Colony. During the year 1950, 5215 sputum examinations were made and 38 specimens of Gastric Washings were examined for tuberole basilli. Tuberculin Testing

Tuberculin testing is carried out by the Government Tuberculosis Service in the Clinics as part of the contact examinations and to limited extent in schools,

Bovine Tuberculosis.

Investigation into the question of bovine tuberculosis dating from early 1950 indicates that this disease does not exist in the indigenous cattle and buffaloes but is confined to dairy cattle of European breeds. The principal dairy farm in the Colony maintaina a tuberculosis free herd by regular testing and slaughter of positive reactors. Among the remaining cattle positive reaction to the single intradermal test is about 12% Among dairy cattle presented for alaughter at the Government abattoirs 25% of a total of 216 cattle examined by post mortem examination showed the presence of tuberculosis, the organism in all except one case being of bovine type,

All milk produced in the Colony must, by law, be pasteurised. The holder method of pasteurisation is used. No other form of wilk treatment is carried out.
